The Gongliao International Ho-hai-yan Rock Festival takes its name from the Amis expression “Ho-Hai-Yan” (吼海洋, howl at the ocean), an interjection evoking the sound of waves. Every summer, the festival — which combines live music, a band competition, and a showcase of independent music labels — leaves Fulong Station overflowing as visitors pour in seeking sun, beach, and excitement. The festival was originally co-founded by Taipei County Government (now New Taipei City Government) and Corner Music; free admission and its proximity to Taipei meant it drew large crowds from its first edition in 2000. Through its performance stage and its “Ho-hai-yan Independent Music Award,” the festival launched the careers of many celebrated artists and bands, including Jia Tzu Electric Big Band, Tolo-ku, Cheer Chen, Tizzy Bac, Sodagreen, Quarter Back, and Crowd Lu — all of whom once stood in the sea breeze, strumming guitars, performing for the audience. The festival has had a lasting and deep influence on the development of original music in Taiwan.
