The United States Taiwan Defense Command (USTDC) was a subordinate unified command of the U.S. Armed Forces. Established in 1955 following the signing of the Mutual Defense Treaty between the United States and the Republic of China, it was reorganized as the United States Formosa Defense Command on April 25 of that year, then renamed the United States Taiwan Defense Command on November 1. The USTDC reported directly to the United States Pacific Command, was staffed by personnel from various U.S. military branches, and established its headquarters at Yuanshan in Taipei (on the site of today’s Taipei Fine Arts Museum). It was disbanded on April 26, 1979, following the severing of diplomatic relations between the U.S. and the ROC.
