Blackhand Nakasi — Workers’ Band was founded in 1996 by workers and labour organisations, commonly known as “Blackhand Nakasi” or simply “Blackhand.” In 1997 they released Taiwan’s first album of labour-movement protest songs, Fú Qì Gè Pì (Luck My Ass). Over the following two decades they continued to collaborate with social-movement groups, running collective songwriting workshops to teach instrument playing and music composition, enabling working people to seize music and art as cultural tools. Their repertoire spans issues from the Losheng Sanatorium and urban renewal to sex work, making them one of the most widely heard independent bands in student and activist circles.
