Roland’s TR-808 Rhythm Composer (also known as the 808) is one of the earliest programmable electronic drum machines. “TR” is an abbreviation for Transistor Rhythm, and the machine was released by Roland in early 1980. Similar to the TB-303, which was designed to help guitarists create demos, the TR-808 was originally intended only for musicians to create drum accompaniment demos in the studio. The 808’s most iconic characteristic is its ability to produce extremely low, near-sub-bass kick drum sounds, combined with a distinctively metallic, hard-hitting snare — both recreated entirely through fully analog (analogue) circuitry to simulate acoustic drum sounds. This counterfeit drum sound was so far from realistic that it became the most iconic drum sound in the history of electronic instruments — the sound of the 808. By the late 1980s, the 808 had become the most popular drum instrument in electronic music and hip-hop, earning the title “King of the Analog Drum Machine.”
