On November 9, 2014, Germans celebrated the 25th anniversary of the Berlin Wall’s fall. In the late summer and early autumn of 1989, voices inside East Germany calling for the Wall to come down grew ever louder; many people, unable to endure the wait, rushed into embassies in Warsaw, Prague, and other cities, while soldiers were constantly seen at the border blocking crowds from flooding through. In November 1989, more than one million East Germans demonstrated, demanding an end to the East German government — a number equal to ten percent of the German population at the time. Finally, on November 9, the East German government announced it was opening its borders to other countries.
