PolyGram Records was once the world’s largest record company. Its formal contact with the Chinese-speaking world dates to the 1970s, when PolyGram acquired Diamond Records and announced its entry into the Hong Kong music market, signing artists including Samuel Hui and Alan Tam — effectively nurturing the first generation of Hong Kong pop stars. In 1977, PolyGram also began collaborating with Taiwan’s Ko-lin Records and brought Hong Kong artists over to develop their careers in Taiwan.
