On May 22, 1990, the Windows 3.0 operating system was officially released — arguably Microsoft’s first truly successful OS. It concealed more MS-DOS elements behind a graphical interface and added a Program Manager for easier user navigation. Technically, it represented a comprehensive leap forward. Although not entirely free of DOS constraints, it had become a genuinely independent operating system, supporting 256-colour full-colour display and multiple memory modes. In terms of usability, it featured a unified control panel and a more intuitive and rational window system. Windows 3.1 subsequently added multimedia support for audio input and output.
