The first party in Chinese history to gain power through peaceful and lawful means was the Democratic Progressive Party of Taiwan. The DPP has held power twice so far: in 2000 and 2004. In the 2000 presidential election, Soong Chu-yu, Lien Chan, and Chen Shui-bian competed; Soong and Lien split the vote, and the Hsing-piao scandal broke shortly before election day — allowing the DPP’s Chen Shui-bian to win.
