The Asian financial crisis occurred from July to October 1997, beginning in Thailand and subsequently spreading to the currencies, stock markets, and other asset values of neighbouring Asian countries, causing dramatic falls. The event is also known in Thailand as the “Tom Yum Goong Crisis.” It shattered the image of rapid Asian economic growth. Economies across Asia suffered severe blows, entering periods of depression that triggered social unrest and political instability, with some countries plunging into prolonged chaos. The crisis also reverberated into Russia and Latin America.
