From the 1950s, Taiwanese people began manufacturing their own records, and “music discs” (曲盤) gradually became widely accessible rather than a luxury for the few. The record industry in this period was centered on Taipei and fell broadly into three categories: “bootleg contract pressing,” “self-produced recording and publishing,” and “import and retail sales.” In 1952, the China Record Company (China Record Corporation, later renamed Great King Records / 大王唱片), operated by Xu Shi, set up the first pressing plant in Sanchong, known for such recordings as “Anping Zhuixiang Qu” (lyrics: Chen Da-ru; music: Xu Shi) and “Lonely Flower” (Gū Liàn Huā; lyrics: Zhou Tian-wang; music: Yang San-lang). From that year onward, small record factories began clustering in Sanchong; between the 1950s and 1960s, more than forty or fifty record factories were concentrated in the area. From 1957, yet more small specialized bootleg-pressing factories emerged, including more than a dozen labels in Taipei such as “Línglíng,” “Diàntǎ,” “Táishēng,” and “Yuèqiú.”
