Known as the godfather of Taipei rock bars, Ling Wei has opened countless “Rock Houses” across Taipei from the 1980s onward — AC/DA, ROXY, Feelmore, Spin, Edge, Vibe, and Jr Cafe, among others. Initially, Ling Wei simply wanted a place to share his vast vinyl record collection and play rock music beyond the American mainstream — in an era before MP3s and digital music existed. Yet these music spaces ultimately became not only gathering places for music fans and young intellectuals, but also performance venues where bands could rehearse and stages where young Taiwanese DJs were trained and developed.
