“Kandala Commune” (旃陀羅公社, abbreviated K社) was founded in 2009 by Chang Yu-sheng, then a doctoral student in the Graduate Institute of Political Science at NCCU. “Kandala” is a Hindu term for untouchables — people entirely outside the four-caste system, a thoroughgoing Other or异类. Kandala Commune holds small-scale performances every two months and continues to release CDs of improvised, noise, and avant-garde sound work even as the physical record market has collapsed — representing a kind of sound that exists outside the academy in Taiwan’s sound art landscape.
