Chiayi Sound Project Launched
「嘉義聲音計畫」啟動

Date: 2008
Commissioned by the Chiayi County Department of Cultural Affairs (whose director at the time was Chung Yung-fong), from late 2008 to 2009 French artist Yannick Dauby and Hsu Yen-ting jointly built a sound archive in Chiayi County — the Chiayi Sound Project. Riding motorcycles with recording equipment, they traversed the terrain collecting sounds from across the county, with themes encompassing oral history, natural environment, music and folk arts, industry, religion, and local events. However, due to a change in the cultural affairs director, the project was discontinued in 2009, leaving behind only the project’s sound archive.
Three years after the “Chiayi Sound Project” ended, Yannick Dauby, Hsu Yen-ting, and Tsai Wan-hsuan jointly re-selected portions of the vast sound archive and, at TheCube Project Space, re-examined these sounds under the exhibition title “Earth / Sound Indivisible” (*Revitalization of Chiayi Sound Project*) — reflecting on their diverse sonic qualities and local contexts and constructing a live sound environment.
