Electronic music has long been associated with dance floor culture and drugs; one cannot deny that the euphoria, pleasure, and sense of liberation that electronic music at times induces does bear a resemblance to the effects of certain substances. J6 of 2nd Floor/the Loop was the first person to use the term “nightclub” (夜店), adapted from the English, primarily to help 2nd Floor’s guests understand clearly that their operating model was different from a dance hall or hostess club. Yet in 2003, when Taipei’s dance bar scene was at its most vibrant, Taipei’s two main electronic dance venues (or “nightclubs”) — 2nd Floor and TeXound — were still perceived as places fostering drug culture. Under police pressure, both were forced to close by year’s end.
