On June 30, 2012, Taipei’s Urban Development Bureau and Commerce Department issued Underground Society a notice with a 14-day deadline to comply — citing safety concerns and violation of its business registration category for selling alcohol — meaning the Live House would be forced to close on July 15. In response, Underground Society spokesperson Ho Tung-hung, legislators Cheng Li-chun and Ho Shu-fen, and numerous musicians gathered at the Legislative Yuan on July 9, 2012, to call on Minister of Culture Lung Ying-tai. The press conference drew a huge crowd of musicians and music supporters inside the Legislative Yuan’s Red House venue, while hundreds more gathered outside the main gate, creating an impressive show of force.
