Date: October 2004 Author: Liu Zheng-weiIn 1953, the poetry quarterly Xiàndài Shī (Modern Poetry) was founded in Taipei, with poet Ji Xian serving as publisher and editor-in-chief. It championed an intellectual approach and sought to absorb the Western spirit. In 1956, Ji Xian went further and established the Modernist School (現代派), proposing six tenets of poetry. His forceful positions provoked a backlash from poets such as Tan Zi-hao, who launched a counter-argument in Wénxué Zázhì (Literary Magazine) — constituting Taiwan’s first postwar modern poetry debate. This controversy also became one of the background causes of the second modern poetry debate in the 1970s, when Taiwanese national self-determination consciousness was on the rise.
