Hsu Tsang-houei, a composer of lasting influence on Taiwanese music, returned from studies in France and in 1961 launched the “Music Making Circle” (製樂小集) concert series, bringing together composers to perform and providing a stage for young Taiwanese composers to present new works, while also frequently premiering important international compositions to stimulate local modern music creation. The series ran from 1961 to 1972, totaling 8 concerts, and is considered the cradle of contemporary music composition in Taiwan. Important modern composers such as Lee Tai-hsiang and Ma Shui-long participated in these concerts.

After Hsu Tsang-houei’s death in 2001, the Hsu Tsang-houei Cultural and Arts Foundation, the Composers’ Association of the Republic of China, the Society for Asian Music of the Republic of China, and the Asian Composers League Taiwan Chapter jointly revived the “Music Making Circle” name in 2002 to host a new series of composition concerts.
