July 29, 1995 was a pivotal day in the history of Taiwan’s electronic dance music: DJ @llen and friends loaded sound equipment onto a truck and organised Taiwan’s first outdoor rave party at the Erh-chung Floodway. Over the following years, outdoor rave parties of all sizes invaded floodway embankments, mountain areas, and desolate sites around Taipei — from as few as a hundred to as many as several thousand people, growing in scale, with most events held without legal permits.
