The Family Computer (abbreviated FC or FAMICOM) is the third-generation home video game console released by Nintendo. On July 15, 1983, the console went on sale in Japan at a price of 14,800 yen. Initial PPU design issues caused the console to freeze when running certain games, prompting Nintendo to recall the consoles already sold and replace the motherboards. The console’s popularity then soared, and by the end of 1984 it had become the best-selling game console in Japan. The Japanese version’s red-and-white color scheme led to its popular name in the Chinese-speaking world — “Red-White Machine” — while the Western version was known as the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES). By 2003, cumulative worldwide sales of the FC had exceeded 67 million units. The FC’s appearance had a profound impact on the video game industry and established Nintendo’s dominant position in today’s gaming world; some consider Nintendo to be the founder of the modern video game industry.
