In 1965, as the United States became fully involved in the Vietnam War, Taiwan became a rest-and-recreation center for American troops stationed in Vietnam. Bars and the sex industry proliferated, and Western music followed in their wake, spreading widely as American culture began to formally shape Taiwanese society. The clubs, bars, and Armed Forces Network Taiwan (AFNT) radio station that emerged alongside the US military presence became key channels through which American culture entered Taiwan, and within a government policy of pro-Americanism, came to symbolize the progressive, benevolent image of American civilization.
