Fresh, open-spirited, and brimming with idealism, Grassland magazine was Taiwan’s first publication explicitly devoted to local literature and the arts. Though it ran for only a year from its founding to its demise, it stands as a record of a group of young people tenaciously pursuing their literary dreams. Preparatory work for the magazine began in January 1967 when offices were rented on Chinmen Street; in March the name Grassland was settled on; in early June, large batches of solicitation cards were sent out; and on November 12, a grand launch tea party was held on Chinmen Street. The inaugural issue was published on November 15, 1967, with the theme of “Poetry”; Issue 2 appeared in February 1968, themed “Folk Literature”; Issue 3 was published on June 15, 1968, with the theme of “Spatial Arts” — and no further issues followed.
