On January 1, 1965, Theatre magazine was launched in Taipei. Focused on contemporary avant-garde film and theater, it introduced major Western theatrical and cinematic trends, extensively reviewed modernist dramatic works, and occasionally covered local Taiwanese arts news — publishing nine issues in total. Its influence in Taiwan was felt primarily in theater and film, and it served as another window through which avant-garde Taiwanese youth and artists could escape official control and commercial interference.
