Date: August 2014Author: Chang Meng-juiThe story behind the Golden Melody music program goes like this: in 1970, CTV producer Gu Ying-de and Huang Chi-chiang of the Eastern Advertising Company co-conceived an idea and pitched it to Koling, an electronics company. At the same time, they invited Huang Sheng — who worked in BCC’s music department — to plan a music program featuring original compositions. Golden Melody premiered in April 1971 (the 60th year of the Republic) on the CTV channel. Hosted by Hung Hsiao-chiao — who coined the rallying cry “Let’s create our own songs, sing our own songs” — her fresh, wholesome image quickly endeared her to audiences. Golden Melody was open to submissions from composers and lyricists; guest singers would then perform and premiere the songs, with audiences voting for their favorites. The program caused a considerable sensation at the time.
