Musical Instrument Digital Interface (MIDI) is an industry-standard electronic communications protocol that defines various notes and performance codes for electronic instruments such as synthesizers, allowing electronic instruments, computers, mobile phones, and other stage performance equipment to connect, adjust, and synchronize with one another, enabling real-time exchange of performance data. It was developed jointly by the International MIDI Association (IMA), founded in 1983, in collaboration with major international digital instrument manufacturers.
