In November 1985, the final article in the inaugural issue of Human Realm (Ren Jian) magazine was an interview by Chen Ying-chen with Hong Kong actress Cherie Chung. The piece included several glamorous colour photos provided by advertisers, but the cover of that issue was a black-and-white portrait of a young mountain-tribe boy living on the urban margins — before the term “indigenous peoples” had been formally adopted. This photo, taken by documentary photographer Kuan Hsiao-jung, defined to a considerable extent the life and spirit of this magazine, which ran for nearly four years and forty-seven issues. In an era of stark contrasts between light and darkness, the founding of Human Realm provided Taiwan’s readers with an important window onto the shadowed side of society.
