After the university entrance examinations concluded in 1995, the Taipei City Government closed off the section of Hsin-sheng South Road alongside Da’an Forest Park, from Hsin-yi Road to Ho-p’ing East Road, to host “Let’s Go Dancing: A Youth Midsummer Night’s Dance Party.” The city government’s stated rationale was: “Students will surely want to release pent-up energy after the entrance exams — the city proactively organising this event can provide a suitable outlet and prevent youth from wandering the streets, deterring drag racing.” That same year, on Retrocession Day, the city government again hosted a street-closure dance — “Resonance Drama: We Are Here” — on Chieh-shou Road in front of the Presidential Office. Subsequently, city governments across Taiwan organised similar dance events, linking them to anti-drug, anti-suicide, and anti-smoking campaigns.
