At the end of 2010, Chang Yu-sheng, head of Kandala Records, invited a group of friends who loved experimental and avant-garde music to dinner, and raised the question of how to celebrate the 2011 “Republic of China Centennial” celebrations. Since most present were musicians, someone proposed forming a group called “Minkoku Hyakunen” (Republic’s Centennial) to collect and process the various sounds of Taipei streets. “Minkoku Hyakunen” was a year-long sonic investigation project that could be discussed neither in the context of a conventional band, nor as soundscape work or simple audio documentation. The group’s members were Chang Yu-sheng, Huang Ta-wang, and Chen Yi-tang. Conventional field recordings often avoid the intrusion of irrelevant sounds, but on Minkoku Hyakunen’s album Bǎizhàn Tiānlóng (“Hundred Battles Sky Dragon”), the voices of the recorders and observers throughout the recording process were deliberately preserved. The album received an Honorary Mention in the Sound Art category at the 2012 Ars Electronica Festival in Linz.
