Since 2015, the “Taipei Sound Landscape Plan,” jointly promoted by the Taipei City Department of Cultural Affairs and the Taipei Metro Bureau, has aimed to use “sound” as a medium to portray the landscape and history of Taipei, allowing the public to “hear” the environment from different angles and create a deeper sense of urban identity. Through the “MRT Sound Landscape” initiative, three components were implemented in succession: softening the alert tones at fare gates, adding transfer and terminal station announcement melodies inside carriages, and inviting musicians to compose station entry music. In 2016, a fourth chapter, the “Station Ambient Music” plan, was launched — creating bespoke ambient music for distinctive MRT stations, attempting to use “sound” to realize the governance concept of music intervening in public space, and reshaping Taipei’s urban character.
