Taipei City Proposes Taipei Soundscape Project

Beginning in 2015, the Taipei Metro Bureau implemented a ‘Metro Soundscape’ project, successively completing three initiatives: softening the alert tones at fare gates, composing broadcast notification melodies, and commissioning musicians to create station entry music.

Taiwan Soundscape Association Founded

The Taiwan Soundscape Association was established in 2015. Its founder, Fan Chin-hui, has sought to transform and advance Taiwan’s sonic culture through field recording, education, publication, and the founding of the Association.

Pots Weekly Ceases Publication

Pots was Taiwan’s first free, left-leaning newspaper, founded in 1994 and funded by Shih Hsin University, which also provided equipment and printing. In 2014, the university and board of directors announced the cessation of Pots, citing ‘reduced funding.’

Gangnam Style Reaches 2.1 Billion YouTube Views, Breaking Records

Gangnam Style won YouTube’s Best Song and most popular song of 2012, and was the first music video in history to surpass one billion views. Two years later, when it crossed 2.1 billion views, YouTube issued a special statement on PSY’s official channel.

First P Festival

White Rabbit Records, dedicated to independent music and rock performance curation since 1999, organized the inaugural P Festival from 2014 — founded on a concept of upending the conventions of hard rock live performance.

Sunflower Student Movement

On March 17, 2014, KMT legislator Chang Ching-chung seized the podium and within 30 seconds declared the Cross-Strait Service Trade Agreement had exceeded its three-month review period and should be considered ‘passed.’ The student movement group Black Island Youth Front and fellow students were stunned — the following day, they scaled the walls and occupied the Legislative Yuan.

Spotify Enters Taiwan

Beyond its subscription model that differs from traditional download-to-own logic, Spotify’s powerful social platform and music discovery features are key assets. Spotify emphasizes that its service makes it easier for users to share and discover music they love.

Di Xia She Hui (The Wall) Permanently Closes

In July 2012, musicians held a press conference at the Legislative Yuan to campaign for saving Di Xia She Hui and other live houses, pledging to continue the Live House rights movement and legislation. After a brief closure and reopening, Di Xia She Hui officially closed permanently in June 2013.

Facebook Rises to Dominance in Taiwan

According to Facebook’s first official Taiwan user data released in 2013, at least 10 million people accessed Facebook daily. Based on Taiwan’s population of 23.35 million, more than 4 in 10 Taiwanese used Facebook every day — a level of engagement exceeding that of any other country.

First Hybrid Live Festival

Hybrid Live, organized by the Taipei Culture Foundation’s Artist Village division beginning in 2012, is an annual festival centered on live music and sound performance, held concurrently at Taipei Artist Village and Treasure Hill Artist Village.
