Korea had been under Japanese rule from 1910 until the end of World War II in 1945. In August 1945, the Soviet Union declared war on Japan and, per agreement with the United States, the Korean Peninsula was divided along the 38th Parallel, with each power occupying one side. In 1948, two separate governments were established in the two occupation zones, sowing the seeds of the Korean War. Both claimed to be the sole legitimate government of all Korea. With Soviet military backing and China’s tacit approval, North Korea invaded South Korea on June 25, 1950, escalating the conflict into full-scale war. The outbreak of the Korean War led the United States to recognize Taiwan’s strategic importance: President Truman dispatched the Seventh Fleet to defend the Taiwan Strait, declared the neutralization of the strait, and thereby prevented the Chinese Communist forces from crossing to attack Taiwan while blocking Chiang Kai-shek’s planned counterattack on the mainland.
