KKBOX, founded in 2004, is currently Taiwan’s largest online digital music streaming platform by market share. KKBOX allows users to stream songs stored in the cloud via the internet and uses Digital Rights Management (DRM) encryption so that stored files can only be played through specific paid software. Unlike the illegal P2P music download software popular with users (such as FOXY and Kuro), KKBOX chose to sign agreements with record labels and obtain song licences, operating a business model that is mutually beneficial to the industry.
