The earliest vinyl records were shellac discs, 45 RPM singles with room for only one song per side. Later came the slower, larger-format 33⅓ RPM long-play (LP) record — what is generally referred to as a “vinyl record” — which could hold approximately six songs per side. In 1957, Asia Records (Asia Records), Taiwan’s first record store based in Tainan, invited singer Wén Xià to release Taiwan’s first LP record in the pop music field, featuring eight new songs including “Woman Adrift” (飄浪之女), “Hawaiian Night” (夏威夷之夜), and “A Man’s Revenge” (男性的復仇). The release caused a sensation across Taiwan.
