After Chinese-language internet BBS software was completed in Taiwan, in March 1994 the first rock board — “Dead Man Rock Guava” — was opened on the NCTU Electrical Engineering BBS. In July of the same year, NCKU Computer Science BBS also established the “Skull Castle” board. Internet BBS was not a peaceful place; arguments of all sizes could erupt at any moment, especially ideological battles between heavy-metal fans, alternative-music fans, and pop-idol fans. The back-and-forth between authors and readers made the boundary between them less distinct, and the BBS functioned like a virtual public forum.
