The history of blogging in Taiwan can be traced back to 1996, when the portal PChome launched “ePaper,” an early prototype of the blog, and to the “Personal News Platform” set up by Tomorrow News in 2000.
In October 2002, the blog (部落格) phenomenon popular in Europe and the United States arrived in Taiwan. The “Traditional Chinese Blog Information Centre,” formed by the arts community, began promoting blogs; in February 2003, the “Taiwan Responsive Media and Blog Experiment” and “Taiwan Blog — Antenna Experiment Network” successively appeared.
Wretch (無名小站), which began offering blog services in September 2003, initially built its name as a photo-sharing site before adding blog functionality. As its user base grew, so did its profile. In 2004 it left the academic network, incorporated as a company, and went commercial. From 2006 onwards it became embroiled in numerous controversies attracting media attention, and at the end of 2006 Yahoo! Kimo acquired it at an astronomical price.
From 2003 onwards, portals (such as Sina), media outlets (such as chinatimes.com), and telecoms providers (such as Chunghwa Telecom) successively launched blog platform services. From that point, Taiwan’s blogging landscape entered an era of flourishing competition.
