Following the DPP candidate Chen Shui-bian’s victory in the 2004 presidential election — completing Taiwan’s first change of ruling party — the KMT candidate Ma Ying-jeou’s election in 2008 marked the second change of ruling party and is regarded as an important milestone in Taiwan’s democratic development. Taiwan’s party political structure also gradually shifted from multi-party fragmentation to a two-party opposition of Blue and Green.
