Kuro was the first MP3-sharing software with a Chinese-language interface, launched by FlyingNetwork. It used P2P (peer-to-peer) technology — a distributed network architecture in which two or more computers can directly share each other’s resources without a centralised server — allowing users to create copies of music files stored on various hard drives and make them available for other network users to search and download. P2P technology gave Kuro powerful MP3 capabilities for “searching, downloading, playing, and burning,” winning it millions of fans worldwide. However, due to alleged copyright infringement, it was sued by the IFPI in 2005; after prolonged litigation, it discontinued its P2P mode of operation in Taiwan in 2008.
