By the late 1990s, Taiwan still had no books on rock music. Music magazines, unable to withstand the onslaught of the record industry, had either changed format or folded; rock enthusiasts had retreated to BBS boards. During this period, printed music criticism books remained scarce. It was not until 2001 that Ho Ying-yi boldly proposed a rock book series to her publisher — bringing some rock fans back to print reading. This was Taiwan’s first large-scale, planned programme of rock book publishing. The series inspired a wave of rock publishing from houses such as Kaotam, Dongguang, and Music Up, and is credited with sparking Taiwan’s rock book publishing boom.
Beyond music, the “Music River” (*Music River Series*) series touched on subculture, gender, drugs, and cultural studies. From 2001 to 2009, the full series ran to 20 volumes.
