Napster was a search tool for finding and downloading MP3s. Through a peer-to-peer (P2P) architecture, it allowed users to share files directly from their hard drives to other users without passing through a central server. Napster’s software gained popularity beginning in 1999 when the company was founded; however, by December of that year it was sued by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) for copyright infringement. The case ultimately concluded with Napster purchasing music rights from record labels for US$1 billion and converting from a free service to a paid download model.
