National Health Insurance (NHI), commonly abbreviated as “National Health Insurance” or simply “Health Insurance,” is a compulsory insurance welfare policy. Its legal basis is the universal medical insurance system implemented under the Additional Articles of the Constitution of the Republic of China. To promote the health of all citizens, the Republic of China implemented National Health Insurance beginning on March 1 of the 84th year of the Republic (1995), providing medical and healthcare services. Its primary legal basis is the National Health Insurance Act, enacted pursuant to Articles 155 and 157 of the Constitution of the Republic of China and Article 10, Paragraph 5 of the Additional Articles.
