At 8:46 am on 11 September 2001, the United States suffered a terror attack that stunned the world — known as the “9/11 attacks.” Terrorists hijacked three aircraft and crashed them into the two towers of the World Trade Center in New York and into the Pentagon, the headquarters of the US Department of Defense. The attacks killed over 3,000 people, completely destroyed six buildings including the twin WTC towers, damaged 23 other high-rise buildings, and dealt a devastating blow to the US economy. Bin Laden admitted to masterminding and directing the attacks.
