Tainan was where “Sunshine” was born. The band stepped in to replace a foreign act that had canceled at the last minute, and to everyone’s surprise, was met with tremendous enthusiasm. Lee Chia-lin, a music lover and talent scout, introduced the Sunshine Choir to military clubs and Taipei audiences. Troupe leader Wu Tao-hsiung recalled the memory of their first concert, organized by Yu Kuang in Taipei: “I remember the first show vividly. When they introduced ‘Raymond Choir’ and ‘Star Choir,’ the crowd burst into applause. When it was our turn, since we weren’t well known in Taipei, the MC said ‘coming all the way from Tainan, the Sunshine Choir’ — dead silence. When we came out, probably because we were dressed so plainly, the audience started snickering. But when the first song from The Opportunists started, combined with our stage moves, the applause slowly built. After the performance, some friends from Tainan came to praise us, and the next day they helped spread the word.” Sunshine made its mark in Taipei, and before long the saying “Raymond in the north, Sunshine in the south” spread far and wide.
