In July 1990, the Ministry of Education’s Computer Centre invited subsidy-recipient universities to establish the “Taiwan Academic Network” (TANet) — building a TCP/IP-based internet system, Taiwan’s first internet system and the foundation for all subsequent government and commercial internet development. Its primary purpose was to support teaching and research activities at all levels of educational institutions and research bodies across the country, and to facilitate resource sharing and cooperation. From 1999 onward, the Ministry of Education promoted ADSL connections to TANet for primary and secondary schools, rooting information education at the grassroots level. Today, TANet has become the platform for internet and information education at all levels of schools across Taiwan.
