The term “Live House” originated in Japan, arising alongside the independent music wave, though its roots lie in Europe — the Rock Bars and Rock Pubs born in the late 1960s were the forerunners of the live house. A live house is a space equipped with performance facilities and sound systems, presenting a variety of independent music acts and singer-songwriter performances. Unlike ordinary bars, live houses have a history of two to three decades across Europe, the United States, and Japan. The live house gave rise to the flourishing of Japan’s underground music, with both feeding each other’s development; many celebrated bands came up through live houses, making them an enormously important space for both bands and singer-songwriters. Overseas, the term “music venue” is more commonly heard — but in essence it is the same thing: a space centred on live music performance. Because the audience is very close to the performers, the atmosphere at a live house is often far more powerful than that of a large sports arena.
