Electronic instruments that produce sound through electricity actually appeared as early as the beginning of the 20th century — the earliest being the Telharmonium electronic keyboard invented in 1906 by American Thaddeus Cahill. The synthesizer was also invented in the 1950s, though not by Robert Moog; it was created in 1953 by Harry Olson and Herbert Belar at the RCA Research Laboratories, known as the “Mark I,” with the upgraded “Mark II” released two years later. However, because the oscillators, filters, and other components these early synthesizers employed made the entire machine weigh 200 tons, it could not enter the consumer market.

Robert Moog, who showed exceptional talent from an early age, founded the Moog company in 1953 — at just 19 years old — and together with his father built a Theremin. It was ultimately after meeting Herbert Deutsch in 1964 that he co-created the landmark instrument: the Moog Analog Modular Synthesizer.
