Tower Records is a chain record store originating in the United States with operations around the world, whose slogan is “No Music, No Life.” It opened in Taipei in 1992 — its second location in Asia after Japan — sending shockwaves through Taiwan’s record distribution landscape. Taiwan’s first Tower Records was located at the Ximending traffic circle: the three-storey Tower Records Ximending store, affectionately known to fans as “Xi Tao” (West Tower). At the time, Tower Records was not just a place to buy records — it was a gathering place for music lovers. Even without buying anything, you could listen to music there, flip through various free music magazines, or chat with the knowledgeable staff for the latest music news. Tower successfully redefined what a record store could be.
