In November 2003, Tower Records’ two remaining stores in Taiwan began clearance sales at both locations in preparation to exit the Taiwanese market. Situated in the bustling Ximending and Dunhao Square districts, the stores had sold off a considerable portion of their stock within days. Shelves sat sparse and disordered; cashiers haggled with customers over minimum purchase thresholds for card payments; paper bags were rationed. Even the neon lights on the exterior walls couldn’t be bothered to light up. Inside and out, an air of desolation made it impossible to connect this scene with the flagship image the chain had once projected in Taiwan’s retail music landscape.
