YouTube, the video streaming platform, was founded in 2005, originally as a convenient way for friends to share video clips. It gradually became a repository of memories, a place to publish work, and a platform for sharing all manner of audio-visual content. As a result, YouTube has been criticised by numerous institutions and companies for copyright infringement, primarily because YouTube itself does not review videos before users upload them; a clip alleged to infringe copyright is only removed when the rights holder requests it. Even though YouTube reminds users before uploading not to post unauthorised audio-visual content, many videos containing copyrighted material remain on the platform, shared and circulated without authorisation and without being reported.
