When Apple’s then-CEO Steve Jobs unveiled the first-generation iPod in 2001, he declared it a whole new generation of digital music player invented by Apple — one that would change what listening to music means.
The arrival of the iPod, together with its companion software iTunes, successfully integrated hardware, software, and digital music into a single seamless package that was easy for users to use, neatly displacing Napster to become the leading force in digital music.
The MP3 player was not Apple’s invention, but the iPod’s integration with iTunes provided a legitimate channel to purchase MP3s, winning over record labels and broadening the accessibility of MP3s significantly. Apple changed not only personal listening habits but had a dramatic impact on the entire music industry.
