“Scarecrow” was the only Western restaurant near National Taiwan University in 1975 where live performances could be staged, with Western music the standard fare on ordinary evenings. In 1976 and 1977, owner Hsiang Tzu-lung, with help from photographer Chang Chao-tang, invited Chen Ta to perform as a resident singer at Scarecrow; he would sleep in the restaurant’s sound room at night. The venue attracted a flood of folk and rock fans, intellectuals, and hippies who came as if on pilgrimage — a remarkable spectacle. Chen Ta passed away in a traffic accident in 1981. The famous tribute song “Moon Lute,” with lyrics by Lai Hsi-an, music by Su Lai, and vocals by Cheng Yi, was composed in his honor.
