Underground Society (known as “Dishè”) was founded in August 1996 at Shida Road in Taipei’s Da’an District — one of Taipei’s longest-running and most representative Live Houses. In opposition to the Shida community self-help association, which viewed Underground Society as a source of social disorder, a press conference titled “Musicians Rescue Underground Society and Other Live Houses” was held at the Legislative Yuan on July 9, 2012, drawing nearly four hundred supporters. Nevertheless, Underground Society announced its closure that same night, July 15, declaring it would continue to push for the “Live House recognition” movement and related legislation. On June 15, 2013, Underground Society permanently closed its doors.
